Block Paving Or Tarmac For Your Driveway?

Either makes a good driveway. Which is right for you comes down to the house, the budget and how the drive gets used, and we will go through looks, upkeep, cost and any restrictions on the property before you choose.

Block paving driveways

The decorative option. Combine colours, patterns and block sizes until the drive suits the house, and know that a single damaged block can be swapped out later.

Tarmac driveways

The practical option. Tarmac is hard-wearing, clean and usually costs less, and a brick or block edge gives it a smarter outline.

Built As If It Were Our Own Drive

We look after each driveway, patio and garden the way we would our own. That is why most of our work arrives by recommendation, and why customers ring us again when the next job comes up.

What a Transformation

Extremely happy with our newly blocked paved driveway - looks great. Shaun and his crew are a very busy concern so when the boss visited us at the end of July to quote a figure, which we were more than happy with, he made us fully aware that he would not be able to do the job until the first week in October. We where more than happy to wait, and was it worth it - it sure was. Bert, John, Merick and other members of the crew are a very personable group, polite, accommodating, hardworking and above all efficient. Two days (3 and 4 October) of hard graft and our driveway has been transformed from what looked like a bomb cratered area into a very smart entrance to our property. Well done lads.

What A Bournemouth Driveway Has To Handle

  • Sand and gravel underfoot

A large part of Bournemouth stands on sand and gravel, the same layers you can see in the cliffs above the beach. Ground like that drains freely, but it will only hold a driveway level if the base beneath the surface is prepared and compacted properly.

  • Weather straight off the bay

The town faces Poole Bay, so wind and heavy rain arrive from the Channel with nothing in the way. A permeable driveway lets that rain soak into the ground. It also keeps you on the right side of the 2008 rule: a front garden paved over more than five square metres needs planning permission unless the water can drain away.

  • Streets laid out before the car

The first house here went up in 1810 and the resort that followed was laid out by the Victorians, long before anyone needed somewhere to park. Where space on the street is short, a driveway gets the car off the road. If the kerb has to be lowered to reach it, BCP Council must approve that first.

We lay driveways across Bournemouth, including Westbourne, Talbot Woods, Winton, Charminster, Moordown, Kinson, Northbourne, Queen's Park, Littledown, Boscombe, Pokesdown and Southbourne, and in neighbouring Poole and Christchurch.

How much is a new driveway in Bournemouth?

There is no single price. The cost is set by the area to be covered, the surface you pick and the amount of groundwork involved. We visit, measure up and give you a free quote with no obligation.

How long does it take to lay a driveway?

Most are finished within two to seven days. A large area, poor weather or certain surfaces can add to that.

Which driveway surface is best for my home?

Block paving suits anyone after a decorative finish. Tarmac is hard-wearing and costs less. Resin-bound surfaces are smooth and let water drain through. We will suggest one once we have seen the house and know how the drive is used.

Will my new driveway need planning permission?

Often not. In England, permission is needed when a front garden has over five square metres covered with a surface that doesn't let water through. Permeable surfaces, and drives that drain onto a lawn or border, are exempt. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas can have different rules, so check with BCP Council if you are unsure.

Can you repair or resurface an existing driveway?

Yes. Depending on its condition we will either repair the drive or replace it. Where the base is still sound, a new surface can often be laid over the old one.

Which parts of Bournemouth do you cover?

All of them, from Westbourne and Talbot Woods across to Boscombe and Southbourne, and north to Winton, Moordown and Kinson. We also work in Poole, Christchurch and Wimborne.
